After the excitement of the Olympic Torch visiting Exmoor, why not carry a torch for bats tonight? Join us for an evening with nocturnal superstars. Hear the bats with our detectors and see them in flight.
Event hosted at the Simonsbath Sawmill, TA24 7SH,on the B3223. OS grid ref SS 773 393. Please park at the Ashcombe car park, just up the road near the Exmoor Forest Inn. This event is part of the Simonsbath Festival.
Children must be accompanied by adults. Please bring a torch, warm clothing and stout footwear. Bring a bat detector if you have one. Food, toilets and parking available locally. Contact: 07875 565823.
We hope for good weather of course! Bats keep their distance, but we should spot them with the help of bat detectors, (which turn bat ultrasound into sounds we humans can hear) and see them against the sky or by torchlight. Bats are mysterious mammals, but you'll be amazed at some of our favourite bat facts!
Some of the most common bats are pipistrelles, but if we are very lucky, we might hear and see other species - perhaps the Daubenton's Bat, which likes to hunt for insects above water.
