Reconnecting People with Moorland Livelihoods

Programme 2 - with a total budget of ú136,400 - was all about supporting Exmoor's moorland managers and promoting good management. This has been achieved through the provision of innovative projects and activities, training, knowledge transfer events, studies and demonstrations.

  • 3 Moorkeepers engaged (1 in Somerset; 2 in North Devon)
  • 3 Apprentices engaged on moorland farms (2 in Somerset; 1 in North Devon)
  • 23 events for Empowering Moorland Managers (exceeded scheme target of 12)
  • 20 events for Demonstration Moors (exceeded scheme target of 18)
  • A range of practical training and knowledge exchange events for more than 500 people. These used examples on moorland sites around Exmoor National Park (and other locations) and were often led by moorland managers.
  • Formal skills training e.g. Lantra and NPTC courses in association with the National Trust and with the West Somerset Community College’s farm unit.
  • Case studies,áreports, workshops on difficult issues and management equipment have all been part of how we have benefitted moorland management on Exmoor.
  • Provision of a mobile handling system to aid the management of Exmoor's unique moorland herds of Exmoor ponies. Commissioning of anáindependent report about the welfare and management of the free-living ponies on Exmoor National Park in consultation with the moorland herd owners.

We are extremely grateful to the Programme 2 funders Western Somerset Local Action, Leader 4 Torridge and North Devon and the Heritage Lottery Fund for enabling us to support such important initiatives for Exmoor’s moorland managers.
