Moor to Sea

The water catchments of the River Barle and Exe are living links with communities of the whole valley system, which spans an amazingly varied landscape from the quiet moorland sources in North Devon to the mouth of the Exe on the South Devon coast.

Summary
This three year project, commencing in 2011, has engaged with over 3500 people, both in the National Park and those living  ‘downstream’, highlighting the importance of Exmoor’s bogs and wetlands for  wildlife, flood protection and as a water source. This outreach has taken a variety of forms.  For example, through close working with the Exmoor Mires Project over 100 group have visited peat land sites currently being restored on Exmoor. Many of the groups who have visited have undertaken practical conservation work.

A comprehensive and events and education programme has also been developed. An annual highlight as been Bogtastic when literally hundreds of people enjoy a day of fun and learning on Exmoor’s wonderful bogs. Understanding Exmoor’s Bogs and rivers has been a central part of the Moorland Classroom . The sites Allerford, Pinkery, Haddon and Wimbleball are particularly illustrative. A key part of the project’s outreach work has been our partnership working with the CLOWNS play bus. Their bus has taken the boggy workshops to children and families both on Exmoor and downstream.

In addition to the Heritage Lottery Fund, this particular project has funding from the Environment Agency, who gave £10,000 to Moor to Sea.
