The water catchments of the River Barle and Exe are living links with communities of the whole valley system, which spans an amazingly varied landscape from the quiet moorland sources in North Devon to the mouth of the Exe on the South Devon coast.
Summary
South West Water has been given approval by Ofwat to invest in the restoration of some 2,700 ha of peatlands on Exmoor from 2011 – 2015. The Moorland Education Officer will help provide the outreach component of this major project. Working closely with the Mire Restoration Programme Manager, we will build into the programme (Moorland Classroom and Reaching Out) information on the significance of mire restoration to the communities who live “downstream”. This work will also link with that of the River Exe Project - a joint initiative of the River Exe and Tributaries Association and the Westcountry Rivers Trust which aims to protect, restore and enhance salmon habitat throughout the whole of the River Exe catchment.
In addition to the Heritage Lottery Fund, this particular project has funding from the Environment Agency, who gave £10,000 to Moor to Sea.
