Access for All

Community engagement activities are a big part of Heart of Exmoor. Thisproject offers opportunities to experience Exmoor’s moorland for people from under-represented sections of the Devon and Somerset population.

There is something for everyone on Exmoor! The aim of this three year project (2011 – 2013) is to help minimise the barriers to visiting moorland that some people, particularly those with disabilities, might face.

The project has worked closely with disability charities and organisations running a number of taster days on and off Exmoor’s moorland. This has helped both shape the project and to enable people facing additional barriers to experience at first hand the many accessible opportunities Exmoor has to offer.

A key focus of the project has been the provision of accessible events on Exmoor’s moorland. Event providers, through training and support, have been encouraged to both adapt existing events and create new ones. Through the project 34 accessible events have been delivered, far exceeding the project target of 12. The project has worked closely with Countryside Mobility in promoting and delivering accessible public walks using all terrain mobility scooters on Exmoor. Nineteen walks have been delivered through the project (project target 12). A number of these have been based with the National Trust at Heddon’s Mouth and at Wimbleball with the South West Lakes Trust where all terrain mobility scooters are available, with prior booking, throughout the year. Accessible deer and pony walks have been particularly popular.

The project has been able to financially support work Exmoor National Park Authority to improve the physical access on a number of routes on Exmoor, for example at Pinkery and Simonsbath.

A key part of the project has been to develop sustainable ways of supporting access once the project comes to an end. An important aspect of this has been the development of photo trails in Partnership with Fieldfare Trust and Exmoor National Park. Photo trails is an exciting new access development for Exmoor that allows people to explore a walk before they visit, enabling them to make informed choices that will add to the enjoyment of their time on Exmoor. The project has supported and trained volunteers to put together photo trails across the National Park. Exmoor.
