Promoting Exmoor's Ponies

The aim of this Project is to support the work of the Exmoor Pony Society and Moorland Mousie Trust in raising awareness of this iconic breed and also to help those who own and manage free-living ponies. The project recognises the special importance of the ponies as part of the moorland landscape heritage.

The EMLP has worked with the Moorland Mousie Trust, the Exmoor Pony Society and moorland herds to raise awareness, educate the public, establish the Exmoor Pony Festival and address key challenges, thanks to Exmoor National Park Authority and Heritage Lottery Funding.

One of the key outputs of the project was to commission the independent report on Exmoor's free-living ponies by expert vet Peter Green which consulted all the moorland herd owners and the organisations involved in moorland herd management, monitoring and registration.

To help deliver the project, Linzi Green has been employed by the Moorland Mousie Trust as our part-time Exmoor Pony Officer. She has carried out a vast amount of education and outreach work, attended shows, visited schools, assisted our teacher training, developed events, liased with all the registered moorland herd owners and promoted the Exmoor Pony Grants to support herd management. Linzi also coordinated the Exmoor Pony Festivals. Later in the project Linzi's role has included advising work and further consultation in response to the Peter Green report.
